Mahathir Mohammad is the ex and ex-Prime Minister of Malaysia, that is to say, he became the Prime Minister in 1981 and resigned in 2003 and became Prime Minister again in 2018 only to resign again in February 2020! As we all know he had been the longest serving Prime Minister in the world, or in the ‘universe’, if you may, not that it is any different. Only that it gives that extra magnetism!
For the long time that I had been observing
him the ex and ex-Prime Minister seems to be a man who likes to be in the
limelight always. This could be one of the reasons why he still refuses to
retire and take life easy at his ripe age of 95. He should just close his eyes
to all the politics and the worries of the world and spend the rest of his
precious life with his beloved family members. But no, not Mahathir Mohamad. He
still wants to be the main man. It seems to me that it is uncomfortable for him
to see that someone else is in that spotlight in his beloved country.
Unquestionably,
Anwar Ibrahim and Musa Hitam had been potential Prime Ministers when they
served as Deputy Prime Ministers to him. But somehow our old man cleverly and in
the way of statesmanship that only he can deploy made them null and void.
Abdullah Badawi became Prime Minister, but not for long. Mahathir Mohamad was
at him grumbling and complaining a few months later. Mind you, Mahathir is a big
name in Asia, if not the world. No one can continue to work as though nothing
is happening when Mahathir is showing his displeasures openly. Definitely, not
Badawi, a good and pious man. Of course Badawi was not completely flawless.
Those flaws were food for ammunition for Mahathir. Badawi resigned in April 2009. Then came Najib Razak the 6th
Prime Minister of Malaysia. Mahathir let him rule for a few months and the grouchiness
and grumpiness began. Najib tried to be indifferent. But badly for him the tremendously
huge monetary matter of 1MDB stuff got into the hands of Mahathir. Now Najib is
in the courts pleading innocence. That 1MDB stuff was the main one that
Mahathir used to make Najib lose the election of 2018 and for Mahathir to
become the Prime Minister for the second time in 2018. As I had said earlier
Mahathir resigned as Prime Minister in February 2020 during a political maneuvering
amongst his Party Pribumi that he founded and utilized and to get the
confidence and support from a few other Parties, ironically, previously his
political enemies of much venom.
Muhyiddin
Yassin is our present Prime Minister, appointed by our King after much
consultation with all the Members of the Parliament and all the Rulers of the
various states in Malaysia.
Now Mahathir
is grumbling that Muhyiddin is not the rightful person to become the Prime Minister
and says Muhyiddin does not have the majority of MPs to form the government.
Furthermore, he is making it loud and clear that he will do his utmost to
topple Muhyiddin!
Mahathir! Oh Mahathir! Politics runs deep in his vein, that is for sure! But you can not take anything away from him. If Malaysia is well known in this world it is due to him, his visions, aspirations and the deep found love for his country. The massive and modern infrastructures, skyscrapers, monuments and once upon a time, the highest towers in the world, The Petronas Twin Towers mainly originated from him.
My dear Mahathir sir, it is enough. Please have a well-deserved rest.
